Can You Distill Water in a Survival Situation with Limited Resources?

If you don’t have a water filter or purification tablets, you can distill water using the sun’s heat. Dig a shallow hole in the ground and place a clear plastic bottle or a container with a narrow opening in the center. Fill the bottle with water and surround it with rocks, covering it with a clear plastic sheet or a tarp. Weigh down the edges with rocks to create a makeshift solar still. As the sun heats the water, it will evaporate and condense on the underside of the plastic sheet, dripping into the bottle below.

Creating a Distillation Column

You can also create a simple distillation column using a plastic bottle and a few other items. Cut the top third off a plastic bottle and flip it upside down, placing it into the bottom portion of the bottle. Fill the top section with small rocks or marbles, followed by a layer of sand, and then a layer of small pebbles or charcoal. Place a few drops of water on top of the pebbles and observe how the water vapor rises through the column, condensing on the underside of the bottle and dripping into a collection container.

Improvising a Still with Materials at Hand

In a survival situation, you can use a variety of materials to create a makeshift still. For example, you can use a piece of bark or a hollowed-out log as a collection vessel, and a plastic bag or a leafy branch as a condenser. Place a small amount of water on top of a heat source, such as a rock or a piece of metal, and cover it with a clear plastic sheet or a tarp. As the water evaporates, it will condense on the underside of the plastic sheet, dripping into the collection vessel below.
