Habitat and Foraging Techniques

In their natural habitats, jackrabbits often forage in areas with dense vegetation, using their keen senses to detect potential threats and locate food sources. They employ a scanning behavior, where they move their heads from side to side to detect movement and predators. When foraging, jackrabbits use their powerful hind legs to bound across open areas, allowing them to cover long distances and respond quickly to potential threats. In areas with low vegetation, they may employ a “freeze-and-watch” technique, remaining motionless to observe their surroundings and detect potential prey or predators.

Food Preferences and Dietary Needs

Jackrabbits are herbivores and require a diet rich in fiber and nutrients to maintain their energy needs. They prefer to eat grasses, particularly those with high moisture content, as well as shrubs and other vegetation. In the wild, jackrabbits can eat up to 1-2 pounds of vegetation per day, depending on their age, sex, and activity level.
