Do you need tools for setting up a Swedish Torch?

April 5, 2026

Quick Answer

You don't necessarily need tools to set up a Swedish torch, but having a few basic items can make the process significantly easier and faster.

Choosing the Right Materials

To create a Swedish torch, you’ll need three to six dry, green sticks of similar size, typically 1-2 inches in diameter and 3-4 feet long. Look for sticks with a high percentage of sap, as this will aid in creating a good flame. Avoid using sticks with knots or other imperfections that could compromise the torch’s stability.

Creating the Base

Start by placing two of the green sticks side by side on the ground, parallel to each other and about 6 inches apart. Place two more sticks across these two, perpendicular to the first pair, creating a square or rectangular base. Leave about 6 inches at the top of the sticks without crossing them, as this will form the fuel bed. Place two to three more sticks on top of the base, arranging them in a crisscross pattern to create a stable structure.

Igniting the Torch

To ignite the torch, place a small amount of tinder, such as dry leaves or grass, in the center of the fuel bed. Light the tinder with a match or lighter, and once it’s burning well, gently blow on the flame to encourage the green sticks to start smoking. As the smoke accumulates, the sticks will start to char and eventually catch fire, creating a roaring flame. Be cautious when handling the torch, as the flames can be intense and unpredictable.
