Choosing the Right Bait

Sika deer are attracted to sweet and high-energy foods, making corn and apples excellent bait choices. Use whole kernel corn or cracked corn, which can be scattered around the bait stand to create a feeding area. Apples, on the other hand, should be cut into quarters or halves and placed on the bait stand to provide a sweet and accessible food source. Add a small amount of salt to the bait, about 1-2 tablespoons per handful of corn, to help attract deer and keep them coming back. Avoid using too much salt, as it can dehydrate the deer and make them less receptive to hunting.

Baiting Patterns and Placement

When placing bait, create a pattern of 3-5 bait stands, each around 20-30 yards apart, to create a large feeding area and funnel deer into a specific location. Place the bait stands along a deer trail or a natural travel corridor to maximize your chances of success. Consider using a ladder stand or a tree stand positioned near the bait stands to provide a concealed and elevated vantage point for hunting. Be mindful of local regulations regarding baiting and always follow best practices to avoid over-baiting and degrading the environment.
