Earthbag building is a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to straw bale walls. It involves filling polypropylene bags with a mixture of soil, sand, and gravel, then stacking them to create walls. This technique is ideal for areas prone to natural disasters, such as earthquakes or hurricanes, due to its high compressive strength. A typical earthbag wall can be constructed using 10-20 bags per square foot, with a 4-6 inch thick wall providing adequate insulation.

Cordwood Construction

Cordwood construction is another alternative to straw bale walls, involving the use of hollow logs or wood cut into 16-inch lengths, which are then stacked with a mixture of mortar and sawdust. This technique provides excellent insulation and can be used to build walls, floors, and even roofs. A well-insulated cordwood wall can achieve an R-value of 30-40, making it suitable for cold climates.

Rammed Earth Construction

Rammed earth construction involves compacting a mixture of soil, sand, and gravel into formwork to create walls. This technique is similar to earthbag building but uses a more sophisticated compaction process. Rammed earth walls can achieve high compressive strength and provide excellent thermal mass, making them suitable for warm climates.
