Choosing the Right Location

When selecting a location for bufflehead hunting, consider areas with shallow water and a mix of sand and gravel substrates, as these ducks are often found near rocky shores and river mouths. Identify areas with submerged aquatic vegetation, which provide essential food and shelter for buffleheads. Look for areas with a depth of 1-5 feet, as buffleheads tend to congregate in these areas during the winter months.

Effective Calling and Decoying Techniques

To effectively hunt buffleheads, use a high-pitched, descending whistle call to mimic the sound of a female duck in distress. This call can be particularly effective when used in combination with decoys, such as a few female buffleheads and a small group of decoy ducks. When using decoys, place them in a tight group, with the female decoys positioned near the male decoys. Use a minimum of 6-8 decoys, and consider using a few “floaters” – decoys that appear to be floating – to create the illusion of a larger group of ducks.
