How to Distinguish Between Mountain Lion Tracks and Domestic Cat Tracks?

Size and Shape Comparison

When examining tracks, note the size difference between mountain lion and domestic cat prints. Mountain lion tracks typically measure 4-5 inches (10-13 cm) in length and 3-4 inches (7-10 cm) in width. Domestic cat tracks, on the other hand, are usually around 2.5-3 inches (6-7.5 cm) in length and 1.5-2 inches (3.75-5 cm) in width. The mountain lion’s track also tends to be more rectangular in shape, with a more pronounced heel.

Gait and Claw Patterns

Pay attention to the gait pattern of the tracks. Mountain lions typically take longer strides, with the front and back paws landing in a straight line. Domestic cats tend to take shorter strides, with the paws often landing in a more scattered pattern. Mountain lion tracks also often display claw marks and a more pronounced impression of the claws’ withdrawal.

Additional Identification Techniques

To further distinguish between mountain lion and domestic cat tracks, observe the surrounding environment and any additional signs of animal activity. Look for mountain lion scratch marks on trees, rocks, or other surfaces. The scratch marks are typically long and deep, with parallel scratches on either side that indicate the mountain lion’s claws were extended as it climbed or scratched. In contrast, domestic cats tend to leave more shallow, curved scratch marks.
