A garage workbench or a sturdy table with a smooth surface is ideal. Additionally, invest in a quality bow press, which will allow you to safely and securely hold the bow while making adjustments.

Tuning Techniques

There are several methods to tune a compound bow, but paper tuning and walk-back tuning are two effective techniques. Paper tuning involves shooting arrows at a target with a piece of paper attached to the arrow, observing the deflection, and adjusting the bow accordingly. Walk-back tuning involves slowly walking away from the target while shooting arrows, observing how far the arrow goes before it hits the target, and adjusting the bow to achieve the desired result. For paper tuning, you’ll typically aim for 3/8 inch of deflection at 28 yards. For walk-back tuning, you’ll aim for a consistency of 2-3 inches.

Arrow Rest and Cam Timing

To tune your compound bow accurately, it’s essential to adjust the arrow rest and cam timing correctly. Adjust the arrow rest by loosening the set screws, sliding the rest to the desired position, and tightening the set screws. When adjusting cam timing, make sure the cams are parallel to each other and the string is seated correctly in the cams. A good starting point for cam timing is to adjust the cams so that the string is at the correct depth, typically 1/4 inch, and the cams are within 1/8 inch of each other. Use a bow press to safely and securely hold the bow while making these adjustments.
