Is Cloud Watching an Effective Skill for Survivalists?

Understanding Cloud Types

Cloud watching involves identifying different cloud types, such as cumulus, cirrus, and stratus. Cumulus clouds are puffy and white, often indicating fair weather. However, if they become towering and develop an anvil-shaped base, they can be a sign of a severe thunderstorm. Cirrus clouds are high-level clouds that often indicate fair weather, but if they are thick and wispy, they can be a sign of an approaching storm. Stratus clouds are low-level clouds that often produce light to moderate precipitation.

Identifying Storm Indicators

Survivalists should be able to identify storm indicators, such as a temperature drop of 5-10 degrees Fahrenheit in a short period of time, a sudden increase in wind speed, or a change in cloud type. A cold front, for example, can be identified by a line of cumulus clouds that may appear as a wall or a line of thunderstorms. A warm front, on the other hand, may produce a line of cumulus clouds that are more rounded and less towering. Survivalists should also be aware of the “cloud-in-clouds” effect, where a layer of clouds appears to be embedded within another layer of clouds, often indicating a severe thunderstorm.

Using Cloud Watching for Navigation

Cloud watching can also be used for navigation, as certain cloud types can indicate the direction of travel. For example, a low-lying stratus cloud that is blowing in from the west may indicate that a survivalist is near a large body of water, such as an ocean or a large lake. Additionally, a cumulus cloud that is towering above a smaller cloud may indicate that the survivalist is near a mountainous region. By combining cloud watching with other navigation techniques, such as reading the stars or using a compass, survivalists can increase their chances of finding their way back to civilization.
