How to create star maps for navigation in specific locations?

Choosing Relevant Stars

When creating a star map for navigation, start by selecting a location and its corresponding time of year. Identify prominent constellations that are visible in the night sky, such as the Big Dipper or Orion. Mark the location of the North Star (Polaris) on your map, as it remains stationary in the night sky while other stars appear to rotate around it. Note the angle of the North Star from your location, which is approximately 39-40 degrees above the horizon in the Northern Hemisphere.

Using a Compass and Watch to Locate Stars

To locate the North Star, use a compass to determine the direction of north and then look for the Big Dipper. The two stars at the end of the “bowl” of the Dipper point towards the North Star. You can also use the fact that the North Star rises approximately 4 minutes earlier each night to estimate its location. By combining this with the angle of the North Star and the location of other constellations, you can create a reliable star map for navigation.

Recording Star Patterns
