In a worst-case scenario, a plane crash, this can be the most experienced pilot or a designated leader. With a clear organizational structure, survivors can focus on finding shelter, starting a fire, and signaling for help.

Signaling for Help

Signaling for help is vital when stranded in a remote location. The primary messenger can use a whistle to signal the group’s location to potential rescuers. A whistle is an effective signaling device because it can be heard from a long distance and is easy to use. The recommended whistle is one that can be heard from at least a mile away, such as a pea-less whistle. If a whistle is not available, a mirror or other reflective surface can be used to signal for help by reflecting sunlight towards any passing aircraft. This technique is most effective during the day when the sun is high in the sky.
