Thermal mass refers to the ability of materials, such as concrete, to absorb and release heat energy. In the context of Earth Shelters, thermal mass is particularly beneficial as it enables the structure to maintain a stable internal temperature, even in extreme external conditions. By incorporating thermal mass elements, such as concrete walls or floors, you can reduce the need for heating and cooling systems, resulting in significant energy savings.

Designing with Thermal Mass

When designing an Earth Shelter with thermal mass, it’s essential to consider the material’s thermal conductivity and specific heat capacity. For example, concrete has a thermal conductivity of 0.8-1.2 W/mK and a specific heat capacity of 880-900 J/kg°C. This means that concrete can absorb and release up to 900 J of energy per kilogram of material for every degree change in temperature. To maximize thermal mass benefits, design your Earth Shelter with thick, well-insulated concrete walls (at least 10 inches thick) and a continuous thermal mass element, such as a concrete slab, to absorb and release heat energy.

Combining Thermal Mass with Insulation

While thermal mass provides excellent temperature regulation, it’s still essential to combine it with insulation to maintain a comfortable internal environment. A well-insulated Earth Shelter with a thermal mass component can achieve a temperature difference of as little as 5-10°F (2.8-5.6°C) between the external and internal environments, even in extreme weather conditions. By pairing thermal mass with insulation, you can create a comfortable and energy-efficient space that minimizes the need for heating and cooling systems.
