Colorado's Hunter Safety Field Day: What Skills Are Tested?

Hunter Ethics and Firearm Safety

The Hunter Safety Field Day places significant emphasis on teaching and testing hunter ethics and firearm safety. Students are expected to demonstrate a solid understanding of laws and regulations, as well as safe handling and storage of firearms. The event includes a written exam with 50 multiple-choice questions, covering topics such as hunting seasons, permits, and wildlife management. In the practical portion, students are assessed on their ability to safely handle and store firearms, including loading and unloading, and identifying potential safety hazards.

Wildlife Identification and First Aid

In addition to hunter ethics and firearm safety, students are also tested on their knowledge of wildlife identification and first aid. The event includes a 20-question written exam on wildlife identification, covering topics such as species recognition, habitats, and behavioral patterns. In the practical portion, students are presented with scenarios and asked to identify different types of wildlife, including deer, elk, and turkey. Students are also tested on their first aid skills, including how to treat wounds, administer CPR, and respond to emergencies in the field.

Field Exercises and Scenarios

The Hunter Safety Field Day also includes a series of field exercises and scenarios designed to test students’ skills in a realistic environment. Students are divided into small groups and presented with a series of challenges, including hunting scenarios, wilderness survival, and emergency response. The event is staffed by experienced instructors and certified range safety officers, who provide guidance, feedback, and evaluation throughout the day. Students who pass the written exam and demonstrate proficiency in the field exercises are awarded a Hunter Education Certificate, which is required for all hunters in Colorado.
