How to determine the age of Eiders in the field?

Observing Beak Size and Shape

Eider ducks have distinctive beaks that change as they mature. Young Eiders have dark-colored, blackish beaks with a slightly upturned tip. As they age, the beak lightens in color and becomes more straight. A well-seasoned hunter can estimate the age of an Eider by examining the size and shape of the beak, with younger birds typically having smaller, more upturned beaks. For example, 1-year-old Eiders may have beaks that are 1.5 inches long, while 2-year-olds may have beaks that are around 2 inches long.

Evaluating Facial White and Tail Feathers

Another key factor in determining the age of Eiders is the amount of white on the face and the length of the tail feathers. Young Eiders, typically in their first year, have minimal white on their faces, while older birds have more extensive white markings.
