Puppy Development and Foundation

Puppy development is a critical period in an English Setter’s life. At 12 to 18 months, they have reached about 50-60% of their adult size and are physically capable of participating in short, controlled training sessions. It’s essential to introduce basic obedience commands, such as “sit,” “stay,” and “come,” during this period. A well-structured training program should also focus on socialization, exposing the puppy to various environments, people, and other animals to help them develop confidence and a strong prey drive.

Introduction to Hunting and Range Work

Once the puppy has a solid foundation in obedience, it’s time to introduce them to hunting and range work. Start with short, controlled sessions in a secure area, such as a enclosed field or a designated training area. Introduce the puppy to the sounds and smells of hunting, using quail or other small game, if possible. As the puppy becomes more confident, gradually increase the range and difficulty of the training exercises. Aim to establish a range of 100-200 yards by the end of the first year, with the puppy able to hold point and retrieve on command.

Staunchness and Field Performance

Staunchness, the ability to remain steady and focused on a bird, is a critical aspect of an English Setter’s field performance. To develop staunchness, introduce the puppy to controlled hunting scenarios, such as a bird in a cage or a frozen bird on the ground. Reward the puppy for remaining still and focused on the bird, using positive reinforcement techniques, such as treats and praise. As the puppy matures, gradually increase the difficulty of the scenarios, introducing live birds and more complex hunting situations. By around 18 months, the puppy should be able to demonstrate solid staunchness and field performance.
