Animals such as rodents, raccoons, and opossums may be attracted to the cooler’s underground space due to its cooler temperature, humidity, or potential food sources. In some cases, animals may dig or burrow into the surrounding soil, compromising the structural integrity of the cooler.

Animal Deterrent Techniques

To minimize the risk of animal intrusion, several techniques can be employed. Burial depths of 24-36 inches can make it more difficult for smaller animals to access the cooler. Using a concrete or brick outer shell can provide additional protection against burrowing animals. Installing a hardware cloth or metal mesh around the cooler’s perimeter can prevent animals from digging into the soil. Additionally, using a 1-2 inch layer of crushed stone or gravel around the cooler’s base can make it more difficult for animals to dig.
