Fuel Degradation and Clogged Fuel Systems

When generators are stored for extended periods, fuel can break down, clog fuel lines, and cause engine problems. Corrosion and Worn-Out Seals

Moisture and humidity can cause corrosion on metal components, while worn-out seals can lead to oil leaks and engine damage. Regularly check the generator’s exterior and interior for signs of rust or corrosion. Apply a rust-inhibiting coating to metal components, and replace worn-out seals to prevent oil leaks. For longer-term storage, consider storing the generator in a dry, climate-controlled environment or applying a moisture-absorbing desiccant to the compartment.

Performance and Maintenance Checklist

Before starting a generator after long-term storage, perform a thorough inspection and maintenance check. Check the oil level, change the oil filter, and top off the oil as needed. Inspect the air filter, spark plug, and other components for wear or damage. Consider performing a tune-up or replacing components to ensure optimal performance and prevent future issues. Start the generator at a low load and gradually increase the power output to prevent sudden stress on the engine. A good starting point is to run the generator at 25% load for the first hour before gradually increasing the load to 50% or more.
