Differences Between Javelina and Domestic Pigs?

Physical Characteristics

Javelinas and domestic pigs exhibit distinct physical differences. Javelinas have thicker, darker coats that can range in color from brown to black, while domestic pigs have thinner coats that vary in color depending on the breed. Javelinas also have longer tails, often reaching up to 12 inches in length, compared to domestic pigs, which have shorter tails. In addition, javelinas have longer, more prominent tusks, often exceeding 2 inches in length, whereas domestic pigs have shorter tusks.

Habitat and Diet

Javelinas inhabit desert and mountainous regions in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, whereas domestic pigs are commonly found on farms and in domestic settings. Javelinas are primarily herbivores, feeding on plants such as cactus fruits, grasses, and shrubs. They also occasionally consume insects, reptiles, and small mammals. Domestic pigs, on the other hand, are omnivores and can eat a wide variety of foods including grains, fruits, and vegetables.

Hunting and Identification

When hunting javelinas, it’s essential to recognize their distinctive physical characteristics and habitats. Look for dark-colored coats, long tails, and prominent tusks. Javelinas also tend to be more aggressive and territorial, particularly during mating season. To identify javelina tracks, look for large, cloven hooves with a distinctive “V” shape at the heel. Domestic pig tracks, on the other hand, have smaller, rounder hooves with a more pronounced heel.
