Types of Water Discharge Regulations

Agricultural water discharge regulations can be categorized into three main types: direct discharge, indirect discharge, and reused water. Direct discharge involves releasing treated wastewater into a waterbody, such as a river or lake, while indirect discharge occurs when treated wastewater is applied to the land through irrigation. Reused water refers to water that is treated to a high standard and then reused for agricultural purposes, such as irrigation or crop cooling. For example, in California, reused water is categorized into Class A, Class B, and Class C based on the level of treatment and potential for contamination.

Treatment Requirements

To meet regulatory requirements, treated wastewater must be disinfected to a minimum level of 3-log removal of pathogens. This typically involves disinfection with chlorine or ozone, followed by sedimentation and filtration. The treated water must also meet specific standards for pH, temperature, and suspended solids. For example, the California Department of Food and Agriculture requires that treated wastewater for irrigation have a pH between 6.5 and 8.5, and a suspended solids concentration of less than 100 mg/L.

Best Management Practices

In addition to meeting treatment requirements, agricultural operations must also implement best management practices (BMPs) to prevent contamination of treated wastewater. These BMPs may include physical barriers to prevent animal access, regular maintenance of treatment systems, and monitoring of water quality. For example, the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) recommends that agricultural operations implementing BMPs for treated wastewater include practices such as crop selection, soil testing, and nutrient management planning.
