Understanding Wind Patterns

When hunting deer in windy conditions, it’s essential to understand how the wind is affecting the area. Wind can be your best friend or worst enemy, depending on how you use it to your advantage. To determine the direction and speed of the wind, use the following methods: observe the direction of leaves, grass, and other vegetation; listen for the sound of rustling leaves or twigs; and use a wind meter to measure the speed. For deer hunting, winds of 5-15 mph are ideal, as they allow deer to move freely without being alarmed by the wind.

Positioning Yourself

To use topography to your advantage in windy conditions, position yourself in areas where the wind is funneled or blocked. Valleys and low-lying areas are ideal, as they collect and trap the wind, allowing it to move slowly and quietly. Ridges and elevated areas can also be effective, as they block the wind and create a “wind shadow” that allows deer to move undetected. When positioning yourself, consider the following distances: 50-100 yards from a valley or low-lying area, and 100-200 yards from a ridge or elevated area.
