Reducing Emissions from Roofing Materials

Solar shingles are made from photovoltaic (PV) cells and building materials such as asphalt, metal, or composite materials. Compared to traditional asphalt shingles, solar shingles require less raw material extraction and processing, resulting in lower emissions during manufacturing. For instance, a study by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory found that the production of solar shingles generates approximately 100-150 grams of CO2 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity generated, whereas traditional asphalt shingles produce around 150-200 grams of CO2 per kWh.

Energy Generation and Air Quality

By harnessing sunlight to generate electricity, solar shingles reduce the reliance on fossil fuels for energy production. This decrease in fossil fuel consumption leads to lower emissions of air pollutants such as particulate matter (PM), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and sulfur dioxide (SO2) from power plants. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, a 1-megawatt (MW) solar power plant can reduce emissions by approximately 2,900-3,400 tons of CO2 annually.

Installation and Maintenance

The installation process of solar shingles is generally cleaner than that of traditional roofing materials. Solar shingles are designed to be integrated into the existing roofing structure, minimizing waste and reducing the need for additional materials and labor. Additionally, solar shingles require less maintenance than traditional roofing materials, as they are sealed and watertight, reducing the risk of water damage and subsequent mold growth. A study by the Solar Energy Industries Association found that the average solar shingle roof can last for 25-30 years or more with minimal maintenance requirements.
