Understanding Bull Moose Behavior

To effectively call bull moose during the day, it’s essential to understand their behavior and patterns. In Ontario, bull moose tend to be most active during dawn and dusk, but they can also be found in areas with abundant food and water sources during the middle of the day. Look for areas with willows, aspens, or other vegetation that attract them.

Choosing the Right Call

For daytime calling, I recommend using a loud, raspy cow call, typically made with a wooden or plastic call. This type of call tends to be more effective during the day when bull moose are less sensitive to noise. To increase the chances of a bull moose responding, try to mimic the sounds of a cow in heat, using a series of 3-5 short, sharp calls, pausing for 10-15 seconds between each series. This pattern can help simulate the sounds of a cow in estrus, which often attracts bull moose.

Location and Setup

When setting up to call bull moose during the day, choose a location with a clear line of sight, ideally within 200-300 yards of a likely bull moose habitat, such as a willow or aspen thicket. Try to position yourself downwind of the area, so the scent of humans and any bait used doesn’t carry away from the calling location. Set up in an area where you can easily move to a shooting position if a bull moose responds, ideally with a clear shot at the animal.
