Arctic hares are known for their distinct gait, often leaving behind tracks with an unusual “lurching” motion. To identify these tracks, look for a series of 5-6 imprints in a row, with the back foot landing directly in front of the front foot. This “gait signature” can be a key indicator of an Arctic hare’s presence.

Tracking in Arctic Terrain

In the Arctic environment, hares often leave behind subtle signs of their passage. Look for areas where the vegetation has been disturbed, such as bent or broken willow branches, and investigate these areas thoroughly. In areas with deep snow, you may find the hare’s tracks, but be aware that snow can fill in quickly, making it essential to track early in the morning or late in the evening when the snow is still relatively fresh. In these conditions, it’s not uncommon to find tracks that are up to 2 inches deep.

Using Sign to Locate Hares

Arctic hares often use well-worn trails and ridges to travel, and these areas can be excellent places to find sign. Look for areas where the hare’s tracks intersect with these trails, and investigate the surrounding vegetation for any signs of feeding or bedding. In areas with rocky outcroppings, you may find the hare’s tracks on the ledges, where they often bed down for short periods of time. Be aware that hares can be sensitive to human presence, so it’s essential to approach these areas quietly and carefully to avoid spooking them.
