Can You Build A Quinzhee Without Tools?

Finding the Right Snow

To build a quinzhee without tools, you need to find a good spot with deep, powdery snow. Look for areas with a consistent slope, as this will allow you to create a large, even pile. The ideal snow should be at least 2-3 feet deep, and contain no ice or water content.

Trampling the Snow

Start by packing down a circle of snow, about 10-15 feet in diameter. Use your body weight to trample the snow, gradually increasing the size of the circle as you go. Continue to walk in a circular motion, adding more snow to the pile as you go. Aim to create a pile that is around 6-8 feet tall, with a flat, even surface at the top.

Shaping the Quinzhee

Once you have a large pile of trampled snow, use your body weight and hands to shape the quinzhee into a dome shape. Start by scooping out the snow from the center of the pile, and then use your hands to shape the sides into a smooth, even curve. Continue to add more snow to the top of the dome, and use your hands to shape it into a flat, even surface. The finished quinzhee should be around 6-8 feet tall, with a flat, smooth surface at the top.
