Quick Answer
A deer taken with a bow can be scored for Pope & Young if it meets their minimum antler size requirements and is hunted within the rules and regulations set by the organization.
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for scoring with the Pope & Young Club, a whitetail deer must have a minimum main beam length of 3 inches (7.62 cm) and a minimum of two points on one side. Mule deer must have a minimum main beam length of 2.5 inches (6.35 cm) and a minimum of two points on one side. Antler restrictions and minimum scores vary by species and region.
Measuring and Scoring
When measuring and scoring a deer with the Pope & Young method, only the antlers that are attached to the skull plate are considered. Scoring is done by adding up the lengths of the main beams, as well as the lengths of each point on the antlers. Points are measured from the base of the point to the tip, and must be at least 1 inch (2.54 cm) long to be considered. The scoring system does not account for the weight or size of the deer.
Reporting and Certification
To have a deer scored and certified by the Pope & Young Club, the hunter must submit a detailed report and photos of the deer, along with the deer’s antlers. The report must include information about the hunt, including the date, location, and method of take. Once the report is complete, it will be reviewed and verified by a certified scorer, who will then award the deer a score.
