Boiling Water: A Tried-and-True Method

Boiling water is the most widely used and accepted method for water purification in emergencies. To effectively boil water, bring it to a rolling boil for 1-3 minutes at an altitude of up to 6,500 feet. At higher altitudes, the boiling time will be longer due to lower air pressure.

Limitations of Boiling Water

While boiling water is effective against many bacteria and viruses, it may not remove all contaminants, such as giardia, cryptosporidium, and certain volatile organic compounds like pesticides and industrial chemicals. These contaminants can survive boiling temperatures and require additional treatment methods like filtration or chemical disinfection. When dealing with water contaminated by volcanic activity, boiling is often insufficient due to the presence of these resistant contaminants.

Alternative Methods for Volcanic Activity

In areas affected by volcanic activity, consider using a water filter with a porosity of 0.2 microns or smaller to remove particulate matter and certain chemicals. Portable UV light disinfection systems can also be effective against bacteria, viruses, and some chemical contaminants. Chemical disinfection methods, such as using chlorine or iodine tablets, can also be used as a supplement to boiling or in areas where boiling is not feasible.
