Prepper Assessment
Living in this county offers a predominantly rural experience with a low population density of 3.6 people per square mile, allowing for ample space and privacy. The climate is characterized by an annual mean temperature of 54.2°F, with a growing season suitable for USDA zone 7b. However, the area is semi-arid, receiving only 14.3 inches of rain per year, which may limit agricultural options without irrigation. The summer highs can reach 93.4°F, and winters can be quite cold, with lows around 17.2°F.
The county faces several notable risks, particularly from drought, which ranks high at FEMA 67, and wildfire at FEMA 65, both of which can impact self-sufficiency efforts. Hail and strong winds also pose threats, with FEMA rankings of 64 and 44, respectively. While the violence percentile is relatively low at 76, indicating a safer environment, the cost of living is moderate, with median home prices around $110,700 and a low effective property tax rate of 0.47%.
This area may be suitable for those seeking a quiet, rural lifestyle with the ability to manage self-sufficient living, particularly for experienced homesteaders who can navigate the challenges of water scarcity and seasonal extremes. However, those unprepared for the risks of drought and wildfire, or who rely heavily on broadband and urban amenities, may find it less accommodating. The low property tax rate is a hidden gem for potential homeowners looking for affordability.
