Prepper Assessment

Living in this area is characterized by a rural environment with a low population density of 19.3 people per square mile. The climate features an annual mean temperature of 64.8°F and 47 inches of rainfall per year, conducive to a longer growing season typical of USDA zone 9b. The humid conditions and plentiful rainfall support diverse agricultural activities, though the summer highs can reach 92.6°F, which may challenge some crops during peak heat.

The county faces several natural hazards, with hurricanes and droughts being notable concerns, both ranked 63 by FEMA. The area has a moderate risk of heat waves (45) and wildfires (42), which could affect self-sufficiency efforts. Additionally, the high violence percentile (88) suggests that safety may be a concern for some residents. While housing is affordable with a median home price of $87,600, the economic landscape may be limited given the median household income of $40,757.

This county may appeal to individuals or families seeking a rural lifestyle with a focus on agriculture and self-sufficiency, particularly those comfortable managing the risks of natural hazards. However, the high violence percentile and economic limitations may deter those seeking a more stable and secure environment. For homesteaders, the potential for growing a variety of crops is a hidden gem, but the risks of hurricanes and droughts could be dealbreakers for others.
