Prepper Assessment

Living in this area offers a mix of suburban and rural settings, with a density of 446.7 people per square mile, making it relatively populated. The climate is characterized by a mean annual temperature of 49.6°F and 38.4 inches of rainfall per year, suitable for growing a variety of crops in USDA zone 7b. However, the growing season may be limited by the cold winters, with lows averaging 17.1°F. Water availability is generally sufficient due to the humid classification.

This county faces several natural hazards, including strong winds (FEMA rank 96) and tornadoes (FEMA rank 91), which could pose significant risks to homesteading efforts. The area is also prone to cold waves (FEMA rank 95) and hail (FEMA rank 94), affecting both crops and infrastructure. While the violence percentile is low at 16/100, indicating a safer environment, the overall disaster percentile is high at 84/100, suggesting a higher likelihood of severe weather events.

This location may be suitable for individuals or families looking for a balance of rural and suburban living, particularly those who can manage the risks of severe weather. However, those seeking absolute isolation or a low-risk environment may find it less appealing. The relatively affordable housing market, with a median home price of $181,800, could be a hidden gem for budget-conscious homesteaders, but the risk of natural disasters is a significant trade-off to consider.
