The climate is characterized by an annual mean temperature of 55.9°F and 53.1 inches of rainfall per year, offering a growing season suitable for a variety of crops. The USDA hardiness zone 8b allows for diverse gardening options, though the region's humid conditions may require careful water management and soil maintenance for self-sufficient living.

Natural hazards present notable risks, with cold waves (FEMA rank 96) and landslides (rank 90) being significant concerns. The area's vulnerability to winter weather (rank 83) and riverine flooding (rank 72) may pose challenges for those relying on outdoor activities for food and water. Additionally, the county's higher density percentile (65/100) suggests a more populated environment, which could impact safety and community dynamics for potential homesteaders.

This county may suit individuals or families seeking a rural lifestyle with access to basic amenities, as evidenced by a median home price of $109,200 and a median household income of $34,254. However, those who prioritize absolute remoteness or wish to avoid the risks associated with specific natural hazards might find this area less appealing.
