Prepper Assessment
Living in this area offers a mix of rural charm and a humid climate, with an annual mean temperature of 55.7°F and about 52.6 inches of rainfall each year. The growing season is relatively favorable for self-sufficient living, supported by USDA zone 8b. However, the county's population density of 145 people per square mile may limit the availability of expansive land for homesteading. The terrain is varied, which could impact water access and agricultural opportunities.
This area faces several natural hazards, as indicated by its FEMA rankings, particularly for winter weather (91) and hail (91). The wildfire risk at rank 90 and cold wave risk at rank 89 are also notable concerns. Additionally, with a violence percentile of 75, the county experiences higher-than-average crime rates, which could be a consideration for those seeking a peaceful homesteading environment. The median home price of $141,300 is relatively affordable, but the cost of living may vary.
Laurel County may be a suitable location for individuals or families who prioritize rural living and can manage the risks associated with natural hazards and crime. Those with a strong inclination towards community engagement and resilience may thrive here. However, individuals seeking a completely safe and low-risk environment may find the area's challenges, especially regarding winter conditions and crime rates, to be significant dealbreakers.
