Prepper Assessment
The terrain is a mix of rural and suburban landscapes, with a population density of 189.5 people per square mile. The climate offers a humid environment with an annual mean temperature of 48.0°F and 36.1 inches of rainfall, supporting a growing season suitable for USDA zone 7b. This allows for a variety of crops and gardening opportunities, although the winter lows can reach 16.4°F, limiting year-round growing without proper planning and resources.
Natural hazards pose considerable risks, with strong winds (FEMA rank 92) and tornadoes (rank 86) being the most significant threats. These risks can impact both safety and property. Additionally, the area has a higher population density (82nd percentile) which may lead to increased competition for resources. The median home price of $194,500 and a median household income of $77,158 suggest that while housing is relatively affordable, it may still be a barrier for some seeking to establish a homestead.
This area may appeal to those who can navigate the challenges of severe weather and a moderately populated environment. Individuals with experience in disaster preparedness and resource management may thrive here, especially with the potential for gardening and rural living. However, those seeking complete isolation or a low-risk environment may find the natural hazards and population density to be dealbreakers in their homesteading aspirations.
