Prepper Assessment

Living in this area offers a rural experience with a low population density of 12.7 people per square mile, making it suitable for those seeking solitude. The climate features an annual mean temperature of 52.2°F, with a growing season typical for USDA zone 7b, allowing for diverse agricultural opportunities. The average annual rainfall of 38.1 inches supports crop growth, although the humid classification suggests careful water management may be necessary during dry spells.

Natural hazards pose potential challenges for residents, with drought ranked at FEMA 89, indicating a significant risk for water shortages. Heat waves and hail also rank high, which could impact farming and livestock. Although the area has a violence percentile of 73, indicating a relatively safe environment, the cost of living is moderate, with a median home price of $115,400 and property taxes at 1.06%, which might be a concern for some prospective homesteaders.

This county may suit individuals or families looking for a peaceful, rural lifestyle with the ability to grow their own food and manage livestock. However, those unprepared for the risks associated with drought and heat may struggle. The hidden gem here is the affordability of housing, but the dealbreaker could be the need for adaptive strategies to navigate the area's climate challenges.
