Prepper Assessment
Living in this area offers a rural and spacious environment, with a density of 14.2 people per square mile, making it feel remote. The climate is characterized by an annual mean temperature of 56.9°F and 49.2 inches of rainfall per year, which supports a growing season suitable for a variety of crops in USDA zone 8a. However, the region's humid climate may require careful water management for self-sufficient living.
This county faces several natural hazards, with earthquakes (FEMA rank 86) and cold waves (rank 85) being significant concerns. The risks from landslides (rank 84) and heat waves (rank 83) also warrant attention. The relatively high violence percentile of 86 suggests safety may be a concern, and the 44% broadband subscription rate indicates limited internet access, which could affect remote work capabilities. The median home price of $110,000 may appeal to some, but could still be a barrier for others.
Wayne County may be a good fit for those seeking a quiet, rural lifestyle and who are prepared for the potential natural hazards. Homesteaders with experience in managing water resources and dealing with climate variability will likely thrive here. However, individuals reliant on modern conveniences, high-speed internet, or those uncomfortable with the risks of natural disasters may find this area less suitable for their needs.
