About Hudson County

Hudson County is a county in the U.S. state of New Jersey, its smallest and most densely populated. Lying in the northeast of the state and on the west bank of the Hudson River, the county is part of the state's Gateway Region and the New York metropolitan area. Its county seat is Jersey City, the county's largest city in terms of both population and area, as well as the second-largest city in the state. Established in 1840, it is named for Henry Hudson, the sea captain who explored the area in 1609. The county is part of the North Jersey region of the state. Given its proximity and various mass transit connections to Manhattan, Hudson County is sometimes referred to as New York City's sixth borough.

Prepper Assessment

Living in this area is characterized by its urban density, with a staggering population of 703,366 over just 46 square miles, resulting in approximately 15,226 people per square mile. The climate is humid, with an annual mean temperature of 54.9°F and 47.3 inches of rainfall each year. The growing season is reasonable for a variety of crops, supported by USDA zone 8b, but the lack of rural land limits opportunities for extensive self-sufficient living.

The county faces significant risks, particularly from extreme heat (FEMA rank 99) and riverine flooding (also rank 99). Strong winds (98) and winter weather (95) are additional hazards that could impact daily life. With a very low violence percentile of 1, safety from crime is a positive aspect, but the high cost of living, with a median home price of $486,900, poses a barrier for many seeking affordable homesteading options.

This area may appeal to those who thrive in urban environments and prefer proximity to amenities and services, such as professionals or families who value convenience. However, it is less suitable for traditional homesteaders seeking large plots of land for farming or self-sufficiency. The dealbreaker for many would be the high population density and associated costs, while the hidden gem might be the robust broadband access at 77% of households, supporting remote work or online businesses.
