Prepper Assessment
Living in this area offers a blend of rural charm and moderate climate, with an annual mean temperature of 64.7°F and 35.3 inches of rainfall per year. The growing season is favorable for gardening, as it falls within USDA zone 9a. The terrain is mostly dry sub-humid, which may require careful water management for self-sufficiency. The 90% rural population density allows for ample space for homesteading activities, though remoteness might limit access to certain services.
However, potential risks should be considered. Wildfire ranks high on the FEMA hazard list at 94, followed by hail, heat waves, and tornadoes, which pose significant challenges for long-term living. The area has a moderate violence percentile of 39, indicating a relative safety concern compared to other regions. Additionally, the median housing cost of $248,400 may be a barrier for some, particularly those looking to establish a homestead on a budget.
This county may be well-suited for individuals or families seeking a rural lifestyle with some amenities nearby, especially those comfortable with potential natural hazards. Homesteaders who prioritize land access and a warm climate will find opportunities here, while those reliant on high-speed internet may struggle, as only 46% of households have broadband subscriptions. Overall, the balance of risks and resources makes it a fit for resourceful individuals prepared for the realities of rural living.
